BSHL NEWS - MONDAY SEPTEMBER 1st, 2008

Thank you for an amazing year. As expected, the BSHL was taken to a new level this past '08 season. With the most teams we've ever had (16), and 40% more players than last year, the competition and level of skill went up drastically. 20 games during the season and 4 rounds of intense playoffs saw the Brownson-fueled Smoke Show claim the 4th ever Walker Cup. What a season.

Next season will be different. I have been investigating and meeting with the appropriate people to make the league legitimate for next season. That means everything from safety issues like permits and insurance, to promotional tools like sponsorships and advertising. For 4 years this league has been built from the ground up and has miraculously remained totally underground, and luckily, under the radar. I believe that it is time for the city of Burlington to be exposed, in full force, to one its greatest leagues.

I will be assembling a council of my own for next year's season. Expect things to be bigger and better than ever. As per every season, planning will begin on January 1st, 2009 and registration will open March 1st, 2009. Again, thank you to everyone who played in the league, helped out on Sundays, refereed a game, and so on. You've helped to keep the BSHL dream alive!

For all of you unable to wait until May for the BSHL to start again, I am planning a large Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday, October 11th, 2008. It will be a full-day 3-on-3 tournament for anyone and everyone looking to play! Stay posted for tourney information.

Sincerely,
Dan Walker
BSHL Commissioner

TUESDAY, MAY 13th 2008

Hey everyone, a few things to throw out there. The first batch of stats and standings are now available from the first two weeks of play. Be sure to check out the scores in the schedule section as well. Remember, next weekend (May 18th) is off due to the May 2-4 long weekend. Also, BSHL "2008" t-shirts are coming soon at $15 a pop. Support the league! Lastly, May 25th will officially be team photograph day, so be prepared to get your pic taken for the site. Even if you plan on getting your own done, you're required to get one done by the league. Thanks, that's all for now.

Yours Truly,

SATURDAY, MARCH 1st 2008

Welcome to www.thebshl.com, the official site of the Burlington Street Hockey League. The 2008 season quickly approaches, and this site is designed to help you learn everything you need to know about the rules and regulations of the '08 season and how you can register your team into competition. Eventually, I will launch a full site with teams, standings, scores, and so on.

We are three seasons in, and every year the league has grown in many ways. Each year has seen more teams join, and with them, new enthusiastic players. Last year saw the introduction of referees, a BSHL All-Star game, and the Beast winning the first ever Walker Cup (their third title, however). We saw the level of dedication and commitment go up drastically, pushing the BSHL's reputation even further along and to many more people.

The 2008 season promises to be our best ever. With word of the BSHL so widespread, the anticipation for the '08 season is strong. New rules allow for stricter refereeing, roster management, player suspensions, and much more. Look forward to the '08 All-Star game in July, and scheduled BSHL camping and other trips throughout the summer. We have also introduced a BSHL Players Association, including some of the leagues greatest vets, as well as new, eager faces that have shown initiative within the league. They will work as a communicator for all of the league's players. The P.A. will help in the smooth running of the league, as well as offering a democratic solution to any new problems that arise (and judging by last season, there should be plenty).
My philosophy has always been to play street hockey like we used to do as kids. No real rules; no boundaries. The necessity of some kind of structure is important to the league, but only to the point of keeping things un-chaotic. There are set teams, there is a schedule, and there are some rules in place, but the ideals are about stripped-down, untouched Canadian street hockey. The charm lies within the freedom you have as a team and as a player. The appeal lies in the friendship and comradery found in Sunday nights. Strap on your blades, grab your stick, and hits the courts. I'm very confident that this year is going to be an amazing summer of hockey. I encourage you to get your team together, throw in a registration, and start getting very stoked on the coming season.
